I haven’t done a fitness related post in a LONG time because it felt redundant to tell you how I go to pilates every week. Well, this time around I’m on week 6 of the Bikini Body Guide – half way though wohoo! – and I’m in the best shape of my life. That sounds like such a crazy, monumental statement but it’s the truth.
I really did not work out in college and fell complete victim to the Freshman 15. I actually had never heard of that term until after I’d already gained some weight. Once I graduated, I was in a turmoil of what I was going to do with my life. I moved all of my stuff from Switzerland, moved in with my then-boyfriend Greg and was looking for a job.
Once I started my job I was so focused on proving myself and working sometimes 6-7 days a week. It didn’t help that I was working in catering where I was surrounded by food. I remember I went to Target over my lunch break one day, looking for a black pencil skirt and I completely underestimated my size on it. I was negatively surprised as to how I had to size up from what I thought was my size – and it gave me a reality check.
My company eventually started offering a gym membership discount and that’s when I discovered Zumba. I was recently engaged and decided to step up my (non-existing) fitness routine. I went to Zumba class twice a week, sometimes three. I didn’t measure my weight loss but I could tell I was getting somewhere.
A few months after I got married, a friend introduced me to a local pilates studio. It’s exercises targeted all of those things I couldn’t accomplish with my cardio heavy Zumba. After going for a few weeks I could see my muscles getting more defined and I felt mentally and physically stronger. To this day I still go to that same studio and if you follow me on Instagram, you know I love their barre express and hot pilates classes.
But now that I’m half way through the BBG, I have finally been able to combat my arch enemies: Burpees, push ups and commandos. Now let me be clear, I’m still dying after (and while) I’m doing them. But I am WAY better at them. Like night and day better. I still take breaks when I need to and will never turn into a fitness robot that does it like it’s nothing. My shoulders have become way stronger, my core has never been this engaged and my stamina is pretty good too.
There’s still plenty for me to improve on but even without that, I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve been very stressed lately and exercising has kept me sane throughout it all. Now that I’m seeing improvements, it’s more fun to work out because I actually know (and see) it’s doing something for me.
I’m not one of those people that simply stays in shape by doing nothing. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I need to work out consistently if I want to keep my current dress size. Food is also super important. I try to eat as balanced as possible but you bet I’m not going to pass up that donut. I’ve never cooked with this many veggies in my life and am learning all sorts of new recipes.
So yeah, I’m in the best shape of my life. It’s taken me a long time to feel this way (with not being a size zero and all) and I’m really happy with where I’m at. I think we should all embrace ourselves more and be proud of each accomplishment, no matter how big or small. So now it’s your turn: What have you accomplished that makes you feel proud of yourself?
