While I’ve embraced my curly hair in many ways, I still prefer to have straight hair. I started straightening it with a blow dryer in middle school, maybe even elementary… I first used my mom’s blow dryer, then upgraded to my first straightening iron (that was a big day!) and have been on a journey of different hair tools ever since. I was a drugstore hair tools kind of gal until I finally upgraded my hair regime to the Drybar Buttercup Blow Dryer and the GHD Classic Styler (1 inch). I’ve had the blow dryer for the past two years while the GHD straightener joined the family last year. I kid you not,  I’m thankful for these helpers every single time I use them. Both are hair tools worth investing because they make my life easier, simply put.

One thing that always bothered me with my drugstore blow dryer (who shall remain nameless) is that it was always so heavy and I felt like it was frying my hair instead of drying it in a “healthy” way. I had it for about 2 years and as soon as I invested in the Drybar blow dryer, I wish I had done it sooner. Drugstore hair tools can be great, don’t get me wrong. But for my hair it just wasn’t working. This Drybar blow dryer is lightweight, has three different heat + strength settings plus a cool air button. My hair looks and feels healthy after using it and sometimes I don’t even feel the need to straighten it – I like the result that much.

Same thing happened to me with my straightening iron. I had a cheap one from the drugstore, then upgraded to a Sephora brand straightener and after a few years of using that one, I decided to see what GHD was all about. The biggest difference I can tell with it? It heats up and is ready within a matter of a seconds and gives me the perfect temperature to straighten my hair. In the past I’d have to straighten one section several times before getting it really straight and even then, the temperature wouldn’t be hot enough and it would suddenly cool down. Now with the GHD I can count on my straightener to get me ready within a few minutes. Now you see why this is life.changing.

I used to own a drugstore curling wand and my hair would just not hold it’s curl! And believe me, I have watched several video tutorials on how to curl my hair and it still wouldn’t work. My hairdresser (PR at Partners K Street) recently taught me how to curl my hair with the straightening iron and it is so easy once you try it a couple of times. One side is easier for me to do than the other but overall, I’m really happy with being able to use the GHD for both straightening and curling my hair.

A few other hair tools that I can’t live without are these Drybar hair clips (that I mentioned in my recent travel beauty essentials post here) and using a small round brush for blow drying. If your hair is longer than mine though, I’d use a wider brush to accommodate more hair. What hair tools do you use to style your hair? Am I leaving out any hair tools worth investing that should be added to the list? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
