How To Return Makeup

Yesterday I did something I’ve never done before: I returned makeup! Never in a million years did I think I’d be able to do that but I simply walked in with my receipt, said I was unhappy with it and got my refund. Now what did I return? I returned a drugstore foundation that I had bought in the wrong shade. It was way too dark on me, even though it was the lightest shade in the range, and made me look like I had tanning lotion smeared all over my face. Not cute. I had such a positive experience that I wanted to give my tips on how to return makeup.

Here’s the low down of my research on retailer return policies:

  • CVS will return any unopened or opened makeup products with the original receipt within 60 days no questions asked. (That’s where I returned my foundation)
  • Walgreens will return any unopened or opened makeup products within 30 days with the original receipt. If you don’t have the receipt it’s up to the store manager and you’ll get a store credit at the lowest advertised price.
  • Sephora allows you to return within 60 days with the original receipt. If you order something online you can return it via mail or go in store to do so. If you purchased something in store then you have to return it in store. If you don’t have the original receipt anymore they may be able to look up your purchase if you’re part of their beauty insider program. Just another reason to join their free rewards program!
  • Ulta gives you a full refund with original receipt within 60 days and after that you get a store credit.
  • Target will accept opened and unopened products with original receipt up to 90 days for a full refund.
  • Walmart gives you a refund up to 90 days but it must be in the original packaging…Opened products are up to the store manager…

If you ordered something online you can return it via mail but you will be responsible for the shipping cost. Depending on what retailer you’ve chosen they give you a return label and that cost will be deducted from the refund amount.

Growing up in Switzerland I never returned anything. It’s not part of the culture and even though I’m sure plenty of stores allow you to return nowadays, you make sure to think twice about your purchase. This concept of returning makeup might not be new to you but to me this is a whole new world.

You may feel guilty about returning an opened makeup product but as long as you return it for a valid reason (wrong shade, you’re allergic, don’t like how it feels, etc) I say you should go ahead. From a brand’s perspective it’s not going to break their bank that you returned one of their products when millions of other people love it. And I think they’d rather have a happy end user who was able to return their product than sit on a concealer that is way to dark for your skin tone.

I always hang on to my receipts after I’ve purchased something and now that I’ve done my research on return policies I feel more confident in taking risks at the drugstore. It’s so hard to pick the right shade or know how that eyeliner will apply just by looking at the packaging. I’m not encouraging you to be a return fanatic but it’s nice to know that your purchases won’t be set in stone. If you’re unhappy with a product, just return it. Simple as that!

How do you feel about returning makeup? Do you hang on to your receipts long enough?
