Ever since I was introduced to the mother of all micellar water Bioderma I’ve never looked back. Micellar water is this magical water that gets rid of all your makeup while cleansing your face and keeping it hydrated. And yes, it gets rid of eye makeup too.
Micellar Water contains small cleansing molecules floating in the water. Once the cleansing agents come in contact with the oil and dirt on your face you can easily wipe it all off. I use a cotton ball and literally run it all over my face. To get rid of my eye makeup I let the cotton ball soak on my eyes for a few seconds and let the water really get in there. After a few seconds I wipe everything off.
When I think I’m done I like to use another cotton ball and double check any areas that may still have makeup: my neck, behind my ears, along the hairline, etc. For waterproof mascara however you will still need to use a special waterproof makeup remover.
After I’ve finished cleansing my face with the micellar water I go straight into applying my moisturizer. No need to use another cleanser, toner, or any other cleansing product you can think of. Micellar water is very hydrating and feels very comfortable and clean on the skin.
Contrary to popular belief micellar water is great for all skintypes. There are different versions of micellar water to fit the needs of sensitive, dry, oily, and normal skin. I personally love using it because of my dry skin. Using regular water with a cleanser dries out my skin waaaaay too much.
Bioderma has become such a huge hit in the beauty industry that other brands have caught on and made their own micellar water products. I tried out a few alternatives and am about to give you the low down on which ones come closest to Bioderma.
Simple Cleansing Micellar Water: This is freaking amazing. It’s my favorite Bioderma dupe so far and is available at the drugstore. It’s affordable, has no harsch chemicals, artificial chemicals or dyes and feels really nice on my skin.
Sephora Triple Action Cleansing Water: I’m not a big fan of this one. It gets the job done but the scent is too fake perfumy if you know what I mean? I don’t really care for having that scent on my face. I like the big container with the pump but I also find that it doesn’t get rid of my makeup as well as the other ones listed in this blog post.
L’Oreal Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Cleansing Water: This one is only available in Europe and is specifically for dry and sensitive skin. It has a little thicker consistency – still watery but not too watery – and cleanses my skin nicely. The only thing I don’t like is the packaging. It kind of leaks on the side a little bit which makes it difficult for when I apply it to a cotton ball. Maybe it’s just my bottle that got messed up…who knows! Otherwise I’d definitely recommend it if you can get your hands on it.
Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water: Another product that I picked up while in Europe – and I like this one a lot too. This one comes closest to the Bioderma packaging as it has a similar shape and closure. Garnier offers their micellar water in two different sizes – a regular and travel size bottle. How genius! I picked up the normal/sensitive version but they also had a oily/combination skin micellar water. This one comes closest to Bioderma if we’re talking “only available in Europe” products. It gets rid of my makeup without a problem and feels very refreshing. Love!
Those were all of my thoughts on micellar water! I hope you got a better understanding of what it is, how it works and how it may work for your skin.
Have you given micellar water a try? If yes, have you tried any that aren’t listed in this post? Let me know in the comments below and I’ll have to check them out!
